Is ADHD Medication HARMFUL Or Helpful?
ADHD Medication: Friend or Foe? Exploring Habits, Structure, and Real Solutions
When it comes to managing ADHD, the conversation often revolves around medication. Is it the ultimate solution to better focus and productivity, or are there better alternatives?
As an ADHD coach who has lived with ADHD, I’ll take you on a deep dive into my personal experience with medication, insights from my clients, and why habits and structure might be the real game-changers.
Understanding Executive Functioning
Executive functioning refers to essential skills like focus, follow-through, emotional regulation, time management, and organization. These are areas where many individuals with ADHD struggle.
From my own journey, I found that ADHD medication helped with focus...kind of. It was like flipping a switch—suddenly, the “wah wah” sound of my teachers turned into clear communication! My grades improved, and I felt a boost in confidence.
However, it didn’t solve everything. Medication didn’t teach me organization, time management, or how to follow through on tasks. It gave me focus, but not the tools to build sustainable habits.
Short-Term vs. Extended-Release Medications: What to Expect
There are two main types of ADHD medication: short-term and extended-release. Here’s how they worked for me:
Short-Term Medications: Medications like Ritalin and Adderall worked in short bursts. They started slow, peaked, and then I experienced a crash. I often felt groggy, cranky, or even like a “zombie.” These side effects made it hard for me to appreciate the benefits of focus.
Extended-Release Medications: These provided a longer duration of focus throughout the day. While they reduced the frequency of crashes, the constant ups and downs were challenging over time. The yearly cycle of highs and lows left me wondering if this was sustainable.
It’s important to note that everyone’s experience with medication is different. Always consult your doctor to determine what’s best for you.
Habits and Structure: The Real Game-Changers 🌟
After years of struggling with my executive functioning, I turned to habits and routines. By studying, working with counselors, and experimenting with different strategies, I discovered that structure could significantly improve productivity—consistently by literally 2x to 10x.
When I work with clients, we use metrics to track progress, and the results speak for themselves. Many clients either reduce their reliance on medication or stop using it altogether after creating effective systems tailored to their needs.
The key takeaway? Medication can help, but it’s not the only tool. Habits and routines empower you to take control of your life, regardless of whether you use medication.
Pros and Cons of ADHD Medication
Like any treatment, ADHD medication has its benefits and drawbacks. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Pros: Improved focus, reduced distractions, elevated self-esteem, and an easier time following through on very specific tasks.
Cons: Long-term costs (especially without insurance), potential side effects (like grogginess or mood changes), and the risk of becoming overly reliant on medication as a “crutch.”
For those with heart issues or sensitivities, stimulants may not be an option. This makes exploring non-medication strategies even more critical.
Is ADHD Medication Helpful or Harmful?
The answer depends on your goals and how you approach medication. One of the most important questions to ask yourself is: Am I using medication to better manage my life, or am I compensating for a lack of structure?
For me, medication became a supplement rather than a crutch once I developed better habits and routines. I began viewing medication as the “sprinkles” on the “ice cream” of my life—not the main ingredient. This shift in mindset changed everything.
Most of my clients choose to lower their dosages or stop medication entirely once they’ve built effective systems. These systems focus on learning about themselves, improving productivity, and creating routines that work with their unique brains.
