What is ADHD? How Understanding ADHD Can Transform Your Life: Insights from an ADHD Coach

In case you’d rather watch than read ⬇️ 😉

Hey there, I'm Nic McLaughlin, your ADHD coach, and today I'm diving into the world of ADHD to shed some light on what it's all about.

First off, I want to acknowledge you. If you're here, you've probably been through a lot, trying to navigate life with ADHD. It can be tough, and I understand the struggle of trying to make sense of it all. My hope is that I can bring some clarity to your journey.

Let's start with the basics. ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder, was the old way of referring to the inattentive type of ADHD. ADHD, on the other hand, stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. Now, here's an interesting twist: three of the world's top leading experts on ADHD actually argue that it's not a deficit of attention at all. Instead, they suggest that we have too much of it, and we simply don't know what to do with it.

ADHD is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder, which means it affects the way our brain develops and functions. Essentially, we struggle with two key chemicals in our brain: dopamine and norepinephrine. Dopamine is responsible for motivation, pleasure, and attention, while norepinephrine controls alertness, memory, and learning.

So, what does all of this mean in practical terms? Well, for many of us with ADHD, it boils down to challenges with executive functioning. This refers to the cognitive processes that help us focus, follow through on tasks, manage our time, stay organized, and regulate our emotions. If you find yourself grappling with impulsivity, procrastination, distractions, or other issues, executive functioning might be the culprit.

I've been there myself, grappling with guilt over these struggles, feeling like I'm constantly falling short of expectations. But here's the key takeaway: having ADHD doesn't mean you're broken. Think of it like being left-handed in a right-handed world. We're wired differently, and that's okay.

Navigating life with ADHD can impact every aspect of our lives, from relationships to finances to day-to-day activities. But remember, you're not alone on this journey. Whether you're seeking productivity tools or considering ADHD coaching, I'm here to support you every step of the way.
